Welcome to ICARE
The Intensive Center for Academic Restoration and Enrichment began in May of 1996. The mission of the program is to provide students who are having behavioral issues in regular school environments a therapeutic setting to work on changing their behaviors to allow them to return to their assigned schools. ICARE serves first through twelfth grades. Students must be identified as either special needs or 504 for placement in the program. A local IEP team recommends placement in the program for a student.
A Little History...............
The program was first housed in a portable building at the end of the Wetumpka Junior High School's physical education field. This was the home for ICARE up until May 2000 when the present facility was completed. The building was constructed using the expertise of the maintenance staff to do the site preparation, the electrical installations, and the heating and air conditioning installations. Sub contractors completed all of the remaining construction.
A $250,000 grant for the Appalachian Regional Commission helped to provide the new classroom equipment and supplies to begin the program. These funds also provided the student of Elmore County the Marshall Anderson Challenge Course (The MACC). Presently every sixth grade student challenges the course as part of the physical education curriculum. Wetumpka High School offers an elective course in the physical education department that allows students to learn how to be a Junior Facilitator for the MACC.
The therapeutic approach is made up of talk therapy, behavior modification, and when needed medication. There are many success stories associated with the ITPC. Students who may have become dropouts have stayed in school and graduated to become productive citizens.
In Summer of 2012, ITPC went through some transformation and we are now called In.tensive Center for Academic Restoration and Enrichment (ICARE).
Please feel free to email the Director or any Staff member at any time.
We look forward to a "Safe and Positive" school year.
